It is not simply a shared platform, a discussion board, or a membership list. Community is created when people feel connected, valued, and safe enough to participate. After more than 15 years of building and nurturing virtual communities, I have seen firsthand how intentional engagement can transform an online space into a thriving network of support, learning, and belonging.
Hi, my name is Deb and I am an expert in building and maintaining virtual communities. I’ve been successfully doing this work since my undergrad in 2009. First it was a groundbreaking online learning community of psychology students at Penn State where I was a founding member and the first president. We had 100 members (25% of the degree program enrollment) in the group before the end of the first year and 15 years later it’s still going strong. More recently, it’s been for the Business Leadership community in the International Leadership Association. From connecting to providing social presence, I was the support for developing engagement and belonging among community members. I am passionate about building safe, vibrant virtual spaces for community members to connect, engage, and grow.
Communities play a vital role in strengthening society by fostering connection, support, and cooperation among individuals. They can provide a sense of belonging and create environments where people exchange knowledge, skills, and experiences. Strong communities encourage collaboration, enabling individuals to work together to address challenges. They also preserve cultural traditions, shared values, and social identity, which contribute to social stability and continuity. Furthermore, communities create opportunities for personal development and learning. As a result, vibrant online communities promote unity, resilience, and overall well-being for their members.
In-person communities often form naturally when people with shared experiences, interests, or goals gather together. Physical proximity creates opportunities for spontaneous interaction, connection, and relationship-building, allowing communities to grow organically over time. Virtual communities, however, require a more intentional approach. Simply providing an online space is not enough to create meaningful engagement that leads to feelings of belonging. Successful online communities depend on active nurturing, consistent interaction, and thoughtful structure to encourage participation and trust among members. Like a growing seedling, a virtual community requires guidance, support, and ongoing activity to thrive. When newcomers see an environment that is welcoming, active, and well-maintained, they are more likely to feel safe, participate confidently, and contribute to the community’s growth.
A great virtual community is built on strong communication, active participation, and a shared sense of purpose among its members. It creates an environment where individuals feel welcomed, respected, and encouraged to contribute their ideas and experiences. Effective virtual communities promote meaningful interaction through collaboration, support, and the exchange of knowledge. Strong leadership and clear guidelines also help ensure that discussions remain productive and inclusive. In addition, successful virtual communities provide valuable content, opportunities for engagement, and reliable digital platforms that make communication accessible 24 hours a day. Overall, a great virtual community fosters connection, trust, and cooperation despite physical distance.
Connection does not happen automatically online. Great communities are built with trust, consistency, and care — and that is the work I’m excited to undertake.
